How to create soft link in Linux / UNIX

A symbolic link (also symlink or soft link) is the nickname for any file that contains a reference to another file or directory in the form of an absolute or relative path and that affects pathname resolution.

Creating a soft link can be achieved by using ln command.
In order to create soft link open shell/terminal and type the following commands.

ln -s /home/user/data/userdata.zip /home/user/data.zip

syntax reference
ln -s {target-filename} {symbolic-filename}

To view the list of links present in a directory type following command.

ls -l
